The creation of INDI has stimulated collaborative research activities among a diverse pool of nationally and internationally recognized researchers at IUPUI, which have a shared interested in nanosystems research (See “INDI Participants and their Research” tab). INDI has, and will, continue to focus and promote research efforts in its thrust areas of 1) bionanotechnology/nanomedicine and 2) nanoenergy, thereby building on the existing strengths of participating schools (Schools of Science, Engineering and Technology, Medicine, and Dentistry) and campus centers.
Research Thrust 1- Bionanotechnology/Nanomedicine Research: Nanotechnology plays an increasingly important role in the life sciences and IUPUI, a vibrant life science campus with an excellent infrastructure to support advancements in bionanotechnology. With collaboration from the IU School of Medicine, this research area not only takes advantage of campus strengths, but allows INDI to differentiate itself from other nanotechnology centers across the country and develop a niche in bionanotechnology and nanomedicine. Building on these existing strengths, INDI researchers from the Schools of Science, Engineering and Technology, and the IU School of Medicine provide the organizational platform necessary to initiate and coordinate collaborative projects in laboratories with complementary expertise, thereby boosting the impact and quality of research in bionanotechnology at IUPUI, as well as its translation into practice via technology transfer.
Research Thrust 2- Nanoenergy Research: There is great interest in using nanotechnology to develop flexible, light-weight, cost-effective, environmentally safe, and high power density energy devices for modern electronic systems and other commercial applications. By building on existing campus strengths and partnership with the Lugar Center for Renewable Energy. INDI bringing together renowned experts in energy systems and nanotechnology to participate in multidisciplinary research and advance nanoenergy efforts across campus. INDI’s broad interests in nanoenergy (e.g. solar cell design, advanced battery, and fuel cell technologies, the creation of new materials, nanoparticles, and catalysts) and the varying expertise of faculty enables collaborative research in this area, which is expected to bring future innovations in nanotechnology-based energy devices.
